Angela China
Angela China (b. 1985), originally from Baltimore, MD, moved to New York City in 2010 to pursue her art career. She began in street art, which connected her with the city's dynamic and led to her desire to paint. Facing daily criticism on the streets, she eventually transitioned to studio work by enrolling in a Master of Fine Arts at The New York Academy of Art. This marked a shift from bold street art statements on sexual politics to a more nuanced and introspective studio practice.
At NYAA, China studied human anatomy and old master techniques, forming the basis for her abstracted figures and paintings. She sought to capture beauty beyond photographs or rigid anatomical renderings, aiming for a seamless flow of thoughts and emotions onto the canvas through classical training.
China's recent works focus on the female experience through loose figuration and open-ended abstraction, addressing themes like rape, femininity, power, addiction, domestic desires, and acceptance. Her canvases oscillate between contrasts—soft and rough, dark and light, peace and confusion—emulating the essence of a woman. She views all her paintings as self-portraits, reflecting herself and the women around her, while inviting individual interpretations from viewers.
Angela China has achieved significant recognition in her career, exhibiting her work in renowned galleries in New York City and internationally. She received the prestigious XYZ Award for Emerging Artists in 2018 and has been featured in prominent art publications such as Art Forum and Art in America. Additionally, she has participated in major art fairs like Art Basel and Frieze New York. China's collaborations with major brands on public art installations and murals have further amplified her reach. Her paintings are now part of significant private and public collections, marking her as an influential figure in contemporary art.
